Ben is here. Ben is alive.
Holy shit. Ben is here. Ben is alive.
Klaus's mind can't seem to stop spinning. After sharing some waffles with his brother, the formerly dead one, the one who's his best friend, the one he thought he would never see again, he walks Ben back to his apartment with the promise that he'll give Ben some time before telling their siblings that he's here, so he can ease into it.
His siblings, specifically.
By the time he leaves Ben's, it's well and truly the middle of the night, mere hours before dawn, but he's full of a manic sort of energy that he can't contain. Instead of going home to a house full of people that he now has to keep a huge secret from, he runs to Obi-Wan's. He said he wouldn't tell their siblings. Klaus never promised anything about not telling Obi-Wan. Ha, loophole!
As the elevator draws him nearer to Obi's floor, Klaus paces in cramped space, eyes wide as he tries to process this information. It doesn't feel real but it is. It's all so complicated and it doesn't make any sense but Klaus is so happy that he could cry, because it's Ben.
He would feel bad about waking Obi-Wan up, but the man barely sleeps anyway (same!) and Klaus knows that he won't be upset. He wouldn't anyway, but especially not for this.
Klaus jogs up the hallway and skids past Obi-Wan's door, grabbing at the frame to right himself before starting to knock a little frantically, swallowing hard as he waits for the door to be opened. "Obi, it's me!"

Klaus jogs up the hallway and skids past Obi-Wan's door, grabbing at the frame to right himself before starting to knock a little frantically, swallowing hard as he waits for the door to be opened. "Obi, it's me!"

He waves his hand toward the door at the sound of Klaus's voice and the lock turns, the door clicking open to let him in, and then he turns to go to the kitchen door, watching as Klaus enters the apartment.
"Hello there," he says with a smile. "You're up early."
no subject
"Ben is here," he gasps out, eyes bright as he reaches out to grab Obi-Wan's shoulders. Saying it out loud has him letting out a surprised laugh, like he still can't quite believe it. "Here's here and he's alive, Obi. I don't know how, but he is."
no subject
"That's... he's alive," he echoes, looking at Klaus with wonder. Darrow has done things Obi-Wan can't even begin to understand with people close to him, both Anakin and Padmé are here and whole when the last time Obi-Wan had seen them they had both been in very different states.
But to bring someone back to life? Someone who has been dead for such a long time? He has no idea how it's possible, but he knows Klaus is happy and that's all that matters.
no subject
"You'd think they would bring him from when he was last alive, right? But that'd be sixteen." He takes a sip from the glass as he paces, using the other hand to gesticulate wildly. "But no! He looks like he did when I last saw him, which is my age." He pauses and turns to look at Obi-Wan. "Yes, he aged as a ghost. It's complicated. Or, well-- not really. I made him age along with me, like in my mind as I projected him, which makes it even weirder that he's alive and my age!"
After knocking back the rest of the shot, he sets it on the counter and resumes pacing. "He's been here for a week, he said. And I didn't feel him. I always felt him and now I didn't, because I don't feel people who are alive. Which he is!"
no subject
He suspects if he were to dig a little deeper, use the Force to reach out, he would find fear within the happiness. Uncertainty. Such emotions are to be expected, Obi-Wan thinks, when such an unprecedented thing happens, and it would probably be best for Klaus to examine those feelings along with the excitement he feels.
He turns to pour them both a cup of coffee, then nods toward the living room, holding the mugs in his hands.
"Come," he says. "Sit down with me. Tell me from the beginning how it went."
no subject
But he can only freak out about one thing at once right now, so he picks the more pressing one. After toeing off his shoes, he meets Obi-Wan at the sofa and takes the mug as he pulls himself sideways up onto the cushions, sitting cross-legged so he can face Obi-Wan.
"I couldn't sleep, so I went for a walk on the beach," he begins, and that's another thing to put on the list to freak out about later. He never really feels the urge to go out in the middle of the night when he's here. "And I heard Ben's voice, and I turned and he was just there. We both thought we were imagining each other, I think."
He takes a careful sip from his mug and meets Obi-Wan's gaze with a smile. "But nope, Ben, living and breathing."
no subject
"You said he's been here for a week already?" he asks. "Amazing that not a single one of you had run into him at all."
Darrow, by Obi-Wan's standards, is a terribly small city. But then, he had grown up on Coruscant, a planet that was nothing but city, and so he knows his perception on such things is slightly skewed. Even so, he would have thought one of Klaus's siblings might have seen Ben before now, although he supposes they wouldn't have recognize him immediately.
no subject
Which isn't fair, really. If anyone deserves eternal peace, or whatever comes next, it's Ben. But now he gets a second chance to live the life that was taken from him so early, and Klaus can't help but to be glad for that.
"Since I first conjured Ben, back when we were sixteen, I've been able to feel him." Klaus lifts his hand from the sofa to touch his temple. "Even if I couldn't see him or I was too high or whatever, I knew he was there. I knew he was a part of me. But-- but when he let go, I couldn't feel him anymore."
He has to pause to take a breath, swallowing hard, because that had been one of the worst moments of his life, and just like with Dave, he didn't have time to actually process anything, because the world was ending. Again.
"And I still can't feel him like that, because he isn't a spirit that I've conjured anymore." He lets out an astonished laugh and makes himself take a sip of his coffee, even though he hasn't even slept yet. "Somehow he's alive again, and he doesn't need me anymore."
He hadn't even meant to say it, but it slips out before he can help it and he blinks, brow furrowing as he looks down into his mug. "He could exist just fine without me now."
That's what scares him about all of this. Ben was tied to him for so long, and had to put up with Klaus no matter how he fucked up. Now he doesn't.
no subject
He hasn't had to use the Force to feel the fear he had suspected was present under all the happiness, all the wild energy Klaus had been carrying with him when he'd come into the apartment. It presents itself now, plain enough on Klaus's furrowed brow, and Obi-Wan reaches out with his free hand, placing it on Klaus's forearm on the back of the sofa.
"You said he let go," Obi-Wan continues. "He stopped being part of you so he could move onto whatever comes after. You were able to let him go then and I think you need to remind yourself of that. It may have hurt, but you understood it was for the best. The best for him."
He smiles and squeezes Klaus's forearm gently. "Now you can both have something even better than that. He can have a life without it being inextricably connected to yours, but that doesn't mean he doesn't still need you."
no subject
"I didn't have any say in letting him go," Klaus tells him, shaking his head a little as he leans out to set his mug down, tucking his hair behind his ear. "I thought-- I thought I had damned him. I didn't even think he could let go."
It's not as if he's upset with Ben for making that choice, because he isn't. He's not even upset with Ben for letting Klaus think that for all those years, because he gets being too afraid to tell someone the truth. He just doesn't want Obi-Wan giving him credit that he doesn't deserve.
Obi-Wan keeps speaking and Klaus finally lifts his chin, looking at him with a hopeful puppy dog sort of expression. The reassurance helps him set aside his anxieties a bit, and focus on the happier parts of all of this. The corners of his mouth quirk up a bit, and his brows lift hopefully. "He did seem really happy to see me. We had waffles."
no subject
"He chose to stay for you," he says. "He hasn't had a real life, not since he was a teenager. Think of all the things he's going to have to explore for the first time. All the things he'll discover. And who better to help him along than his brother? This is a brand new world for him, he's going to need you there when he encounters things that he's never had to deal with before."
Then his smile grows and he says, "And who else is going to feed him waffles? Did you order them or did you at least make them properly? From scratch? Because if you didn't, you know I'm going to have to rectify that situation."
no subject
"You know damn well that I didn't make waffles," Klaus says with a wet sort of chuckle, reaching out to push Obi by the shoulder before wiping briefly at his eyes, unsurprised to find that a few tears have spilled.
"Are you offering to cook for my brother?" He asks with a smile on his face, reaching out to curl his fingers around Obi's wrist. "You're terribly sweet."
no subject
He's teasing, his smile still soft as he goes to pick up his coffee mug again, taking a sip as he watches Klaus from over the rim.
"Have you slept at all tonight?" he asks. "Or did you come here straight from getting Ben settled in his new quarters?"
no subject
But Obi-Wan isn't pressuring him for that. He isn't even outright asking. He's just putting the offer on the table, so Klaus just smiles back at him.
"No, I haven't slept," Klaus sighs out, turning until he can lay down and rest his head in Obi-Wan's lap, carefully ducking under the arm holding the coffee. "Every time I tried, I just heard screaming, so I took a walk to smoke some weed and try and relax a bit."
He turns his head to nuzzle up under the thin tee that Obi has on, until he can press his face to the warmth of his stomach. "Then Ben, then waffles, then Ben's place." He pauses to yawn. "And then here. I just-- I had to tell you."
no subject
Not now, however. Now isn't the time.
He strokes his fingers through Klaus's hair, hooking curls behind his ear, then laughs softly when Klaus nuzzles against his stomach. With his head tipped back against the sofa cushions behind him, he can feel the calm in this moment, the warmth that infuses the entire apartment with Klaus here. What a strange world they've found themselves in, so unexpected and wonderful, to give them both a second chance in the truest sense of the words.
"He's going to be able to experience so many new things now," he says, thinking of Ben. "And you'll be right there with him."
no subject
With Obi-Wan, those stresses are lessened. He feels safe here, and cared for. The ghosts still come for him, but they feed on his pain and his fear and those things aren't as strong when they're together. Obi-Wan keeps him safe, and may very well be saving his life.
Not to mention his siblings, and how they seem to be growing closer here in Darrow. Klaus needs these connections, these people who care about him without wanting him to be something else. He doesn't know how this will fit in with Ben, who Klaus seemed to disappoint over and over again for years, but maybe things will be different now. He won't just have to sit there and watch Klaus squander his life away. He can go make his own choices, his own mistakes, and maybe it will take some of the pressure off of Klaus.
He shudders to think what might have happened to him if he were in Darrow all alone, without any of his siblings, or without this wonderful man to care for him. He'd be lost entirely, he thinks.
Obi-Wan seems so genuinely happy for Klaus, and he doesn't know what to do with all that he's feeling, so be bites gently at Obi's stomach instead, holding a bit of flesh between his teeth for a moment before letting go.
"He asked me not to tell the others yet," he admits, still tucked under Obi's shirt. "He's nervous."
no subject
It's been some time since Obi-Wan has thought of their connection as being simply about the physical relationship they'd cultivated. The night in the park, when Klaus had first told him about Ben, that had all changed. He had still asked for nothing, expected nothing, but he had known all the same that things had shifted. They'd grown. A connection had been forged between them and it only grows every day. If it were only about a sexual relationship, they wouldn't be having this conversation now, Klaus's head wouldn't be resting in his lap, they wouldn't be quite so comfortable.
But they are.
"I can understand that," he says in a soft, thoughtful voice. "They haven't seen him since he was a teenager, correct? It must be overwhelming to suddenly be alive when he hasn't been for a long time and to be faced with seeing much of his family all over again."
no subject
He opens his mouth and then closes it again, unable to find the words to express what he's feeling. He doesn't even know if it's rational, or if he's fearing something that will never come to pass.
"I'm used to not telling them about him, anyway," he mumbles, sighing as he rolls onto his back and stares up at the ceiling.
no subject
Maybe they had just hoped. Hoped their brother was gone, that he didn't have to linger. He supposes he can understand that. Had he known Klaus before now, had he been on Mandalore, Obi-Wan doesn't think he would have ever asked if he could see Satine. He prefers to think of her as having gone back within the Force, her energy having blended once more with the greater energy of the galaxy.
"And that's why you're nervous, too," he says. He doesn't need the Force to know that much. It's written all over Klaus's face, in the way he doesn't seem to know what to say.
no subject
"He told us that it was our fault. We watched our brother die this awful, violent death and at his funeral, instead of a eulogy or anything kind, our father told us that it was our fault," he gets out, reaching up to cover his eyes as he remembers what that moment felt like, how painful it was, even if wasn't all that surprising.
He goes quiet for a long moment, breathing deeply to try and contain himself, and then keeping one hand over his eyes as he clutches at Obi-Wan's hand with the other. "So, maybe no one wanted to, after that. And when I did conjure him-- I don't know. We were all just so broken after that. We weren't a team anymore. I left not long after and Ben came with me, obviously."
His hand falls from his eyes, revealing lashes clumped with tears. "And when we met up again after Dad died, I guess-- I felt too guilty to tell them, because I thought it was my fault that Ben was still around."
no subject
"I hope someone else has said this by now, but your father was wrong."
A funeral is not for the dead, but for the living. Klaus's father should have allowed his other children time to mourn the loss of their brother, should have given them space in which to examine their grief and sit with it, accept it for what it was instead of being forced to swallow the lie that they had somehow been responsible.
"I know you worry what they'll think, but they're your family," he says thoughtfully. "You need to give them the opportunity to understand. They'll probably surprise you."
no subject
He nods a little, reaching up to touch his fingertips to Obi's chin, gently twisting bits of his beard as he takes a moment to process everything he's feeling. Family has always been sort of a complicated concept to Klaus, but Obi-Wan is right. His siblings are his family. They might fight, or misunderstand each other at times, but they love each other.
"You're very good at this," Klaus says, instead of thank you. He always makes Klaus feel better without coddling him or feeding him bullshit. He has no idea how to convey how much he appreciates that.
no subject
He keeps thinking that it means something for Klaus to have come here in the early hours of the morning. They both know it does even if neither of them say it and Obi-Wan holds that knowledge close, lets it warm him.
"I have a vested interest in seeing you happy," he says instead of talking about this particular thing growing between them day by day. "And an unfortunately innate tendency to be a teacher no matter who I'm speaking with. Some people find it very annoying, so I'm glad you think I'm good at it."
no subject
"You do make me happy," he says in a shaky voice, sitting up so he can curl his arms around Obi's shoulders in a desperate sort of hug, burying his face in Obi's neck as he lets out a sound almost like a sob. It's just so much to feel all at once, and he's still grappling with letting himself feel as if he deserves it at all.
But he came here. This is the first place he thought of when he needed somewhere to go, someone to tell. There was no other choice. "I want to make you happy, too."
no subject
It's true he's always been good with words, but as with Satine, he feels incapable of saying the right ones in a moment like this. A perfect Jedi, certainly, because he's never known how to properly address his feelings when he does have them short of meditating on them and then letting them go.
But that doesn't always work. Obi-Wan had learned that a long time ago, but it seems somewhere along the way he had forgotten. He's learning it all over again.
"You do," he says simply. "In a way I'd thought lost to me."
no subject
For one brief moment, he wonders if caring for Obi-Wan so much is a betrayal to Dave in some way, but the thought is dismissed as quickly as it comes about. His love for Dave will always be a part of him, and it will never flicker, let alone fade, but Dave would also want him to be happy. Klaus is more sure of this than anything.
Just as he's sure, just going off of what he's been told, that Satine would want the same for Obi-Wan. Klaus could never be her, just as Obi-Wan could never be Dave, but that isn't what this is. No one is being replaced. Such a thing is impossible. But maybe they can create something new, something real, with the understanding that their hearts will always be shared with another.
"Can I crash here for a few hours?" He says as he pulls back to look at Obi-Wan, sniffling a bit and taking a breath. "I want to go back to the house in case Ben decides to come by, but I want to sleep a little." He bites his lip and slides his hand along Obi-Wan's chest, looking almost shy. "You're probably up for the day, but maybe you could-- hold me a little? Until I fall asleep?"
no subject
Even if he doesn't get up and go about his day once Klaus is asleep, there are plenty of things Obi-Wan still do. He has a pile of unread books on his bedside table, some about the history of Darrow, others fictional narratives that he's hoping to dive into. There is also the aspect of finding something to do with his free time here, something he finds fulfilling, which is a task he must meditate on further before he makes any kind of decision.
All this he can do from bed. And he suspects Klaus really will only sleep for a few hours before wanting to go back for Ben and Obi-Wan understands that.
no subject
But now, he just wants to lay in Obi-Wan's arms. He wants to be held, to be kissed chastely on his forehead, to have his hair smoothed back. That means something, as does the rest of this, but Klaus has barely slept in days. He'll overthink all of this later.
Now, he wriggles out of his jeans and sweater, leaving him in a pair of black boxer briefs as he crawls onto Obi-Wan's bed and faceplants into the pillow with a groan.
no subject
They've known each other for not quite three months, he thinks, slowly uncurling his fingers and then curling them again. He moves his hand over Klaus's back as he does so, watching the way his ribs expand with each breath and then contract when he exhales, close enough that his breath is warm on Obi-Wan's arm. Not quite three months and yet hadn't he known just how he felt about Satine in a much shorter amount of time? He had spent more time denying it, obsessed with being the perfect Jedi, but that was more than two decades ago. He's grown older and learned how short life really is.
Now he only regrets he hadn't told her sooner. That they had lost so much time. And yet he knows he can't say anything to Klaus, especially not now. It wouldn't be fair to him.
Instead he ducks his head, presses a kiss to Klaus's temple and then says, "You don't mind if I read, do you?"
no subject
He curls up against Obi's side, slinging an arm around him and letting himself be soothed by the soft touches, and the evenness of his breathing. There is so much to think about, from Ben to his family, to what being here in this bed right now means, but he'll push that off for now, because he just wants some rest and this is where he seems to get it.
"No, go ahead," he murmurs, smiling softly at the kiss without opening his eyes. "I just want you here."

There is no comparing Klaus and Satine and Obi-Wan would never presume to do such a thing. They're incredibly different, though he does find it rather amusing that he's found himself once again falling for someone who is more or less a self-proclaimed pacifist. He does wish he could have done this for her, however. While it's true he and Qui-Gon kept her safe for over a year, they never had a chance to do anything remotely like this. He was there for her, but primarily as a Jedi, not as a man.
Once, on an ice planet, they'd all had to stay close in their lodgings in order to stay warm. Satine had fallen asleep holding his hand under their blankets and Obi-Wan had sat up the entire night, revealing of the feeling of her long, slim fingers encased in the palm of his hand. With Klaus these moments are so much easier to find and he's incredibly grateful for them.
He reaches over to retrieve his book with his free hand, the other still draped across Klaus's back and he smiles down at him for a moment before opening his book and beginning to read.
